This gallery contains an eclectic mix of uniquely designed pieces representing a wide variety of advanced art glass techniques such as slumping, painting, etching and fusing.

TRADITIONAL PAINTED GLASS

Vitreous paints (a mixture of ground glass and a pigment oxide or metallic oxide) is liquified with water, alcohol,or oils such as clove or lavender + a binder to render fine detail on the surface of the glass. The painting is done in various stages consisting of tracing, matting and the application of color, which may be hi-fire stains, enamels or silver stains. Each stage is fired in a kiln from 1050-1250 degrees F. To render flesh tones in an artwork, the individual pieces may have to be fired as many as 4 times or more to get the proper matting tones. The artist controls the light by matting and scrubbing(removing) highlights in the dried pigments before firing. Specialized brushes are used for blending and tracing.

FUSED GLASS

Glass of the same compatibility(COE) are layered and fired in the kiln to approx. 1500 degrees F. for a full fuse and at a lower temp. for a tack fuse(leaving a relief texture). Different inclusions can be used such as mica, wire, dichroic glass, goldstone, silver ,copper and gold leaf, stringers, canes and various textures of frit or confetti. Glass can be layered(forming flashed glass), fused , etched with a design and then fired to a full fuse fire polish to create interesting positive negative areas that can stand alone or be further detailed by painting and firing again.

SLUMPED GLASS

The process of forming glass into a mold(slumping) or over a mold(draping). The molds are made from refractory materials or stainless steel that can withstand the hi temp of the kiln. Glass will usually from aronud 1250-1300 degreesF.

All the above techniques allow the artist to expand the medium beyond selecting commercially available glass, cutting and glazing.

FACETED SLAB GLASS

This process uses 8" X 12" dalles or slabs of casted 1" thick glass that is cut and chipped with a carbide hammer and set in epoxy with an aggregate finish.
